SSKDD – South Sound Kids Drum and Dance – A Brief History
South Sound Kids Drum & Dance was born in 1999 from the hearts and minds of educators, social service providers, parents, amateur musicians, dancers and others who believe music and dance are a big part of what it means to be human. We know from our personal experience and from working with hundreds of students and dozens of teachers that for some people, music and dance hold the key to really feeling alive.

Philosophy
The magic of music and dance belongs to every person. . .it is our birthright to sing, dance and play! Our approach to music and movement education and performance centers around four guiding principles:

When we sing, dance and play, we are empowered.

When we sing, dance and play, we build an inclusive, global community.

When we sing, dance and play, we strengthen our hearts, minds, bodies and spirits.

When we sing, dance and play, we bring healing to our world and its people.
Music originates in the heart and soul of every person on this earth. In a spirit of generosity, we can help each other to discover the music which lives inside of us just as we recognize it in the world around us; a glorious gift to be given and received. When we sing and dance together, individuality is celebrated and embraced as a strength of the greater community; we learn that our commonalities are many and we are intimately and ultimately connected to one another.

Music lifts the spirit as it quickens the ear and enlivens the intellect; it can express the deepest of emotions where words fall short. Music is the heart of humankind. It crosses all boundaries, all cultures, all barriers. Within each of us lives the song, the dance, and the drum – we have only to journey inside of ourselves to allow her to sing.
